Course Description

This course will discuss the role that the mind plays in relation to pain in the body.  Through an ethical lens, we will discuss the history and science of chronic pain and trauma, along with the ethics of treating clients in chronic pain or with a history of trauma.  Additionally, we will go over guidelines on maintaining healthy boundaries, and communicating in a way that respects the scope of practice of licensed massage therapists.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

  • Explain the history, biology, and psychobiology of the mind-body connection in regards to chronic pain and trauma.
  • Describe ethical things to consider when treating chronic pain and trauma populations, while maintaining appropriate boundaries, and communicating within the scope of practice of Licensed Massage Therapists.
  • Describe how to approach a treatment session through a trauma-informed, bio-psycho-social lens.
  • Ethics in Mind Body Healing
