Chronic pain persists partly due to fear of the unknown within our bodies. Pain itself is the primitive autonomic nervous system's way of telling us it suspects danger, and we better prepare to fight, flee, or freeze. This is great if we are in true danger, but not so great if the danger is being late to an important meeting, or being terrified of dancing. if we stimulate the more evolved parts of our brain (specifically, the dorsal lateral pre-frontal cortex) through educating ourselves on the neuroscience of pain, we can "out-smart" our primitive nervous system and influence it to rest, relax, and allow us to be pain-free.
Below are some great You-Tube videos from leading experts in chronic pain research. If you are currently experiencing mild or moderate pain, ask yourself what number it would be on a scale from 1-10 (10 being the worst)? After you watch a few videos, check in with your pain and see if it has lowered.
I will be updating and adding more videos frequently, so be sure to check back!
There are also some great podcasts out there so you can listen on the go! "Mindbody Mastery with Katelyn Michals, L.Ac." is a great one, especially episodes 2, 3, 4, 7, and 13
